US President Joe Biden has announced the withdrawal of US and coalition forces from Afghanistan by September 11. He has said that 20 years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, there is no justification for the US military to remain in Afghanistan. "The goals of the Afghan war have been achieved," he said.
Addressing the nation in Washington, DC, President Biden said al-Qaeda had disbanded in Afghanistan and that Osama bin Laden had been brought to justice. Now is the time to end America's longest war.
"I am the fourth US president to represent the US military presence in Afghanistan, and two Republicans and two Democrats have worked to end the war in Afghanistan," Biden said. And now that responsibility should not go to the fifth president.
According to President Biden, after the terrorist attack on the United States, when the then US President George W. Bush decided to attack terrorist hideouts in Afghanistan, he supported it. And then, eight years later, he went to Afghanistan at the behest of former President Barack Obama and visited areas like the Kunar Valley.
"I am already convinced that the Afghan leadership must play its part in finding a lasting political solution to Afghanistan. An increase in US and coalition forces cannot establish a stable government in Afghanistan," he said.
President Biden said he had decided to withdraw troops from Afghanistan on September 11 this year after consulting with allies, military leaders, lawmakers and Vice President Kamala Harris. He has also consulted with former President George W. Bush on his decision.
President Biden stressed that his administration will continue to support peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban and international efforts to train the Afghan army.
He also said the Taliban would be held accountable for keeping its promise not to allow Afghan territory to be used by any terrorist group.
President Joe Biden warned the Taliban that if they carried out attacks during the withdrawal of US and coalition forces, the United States and its allies would respond with force.
President Joe Biden has said that ending the 20-year war in Afghanistan is in America's interest, even as bin Laden has been brought to justice and al Qaeda has disintegrated in Afghanistan.
According to Voice of America correspondent Steve Herman, a senior Biden administration official said the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan was necessary to keep an eye on the global challenges facing the United States for two decades. Not before
